History of Grama Panchayat

In ancient times, this region was known as “Gurushreepuram.” Historical records suggest that the name later evolved into “Kurichy.”

Kurichy was once part of Neelamperoor Panchayat. Later, for administrative convenience, the area was reorganized. The present Kurichy Grama Panchayat was officially formed in February 1962 by combining the areas of Ithithanam and old Kurichy.

Geographically, Kurichy was an area of backwaters and small hillocks. Some historians believe that the name “Kurichy” originated from the word “Kurinji,” which refers to hilly landscapes in ancient Tamil-Malayalam culture.

Agriculture was the main occupation of the people. Paddy cultivation, coconut farming, rubber plantations, and vegetable farming were common in the region. Kurichy later achieved significant progress in education and social development, with high literacy and improved living standards.

People from different religious communities have lived together harmoniously in Kurichy for generations. Ancient churches and temples form an important part of its cultural heritage. Notable landmarks include St. Xavier’s Church and Thrikkapaleswaram Shiva Temple, both of which hold historical importance.
