In ancient times, this region was known as “Gurushreepuram.” Historical records suggest that the name later evolved into “Kurichy.” Kurichy was once part of Neelamperoor Panchayat. Later, for administrative convenience, the area was reorganized. The present Kurichy Grama Panchayat was officially formed in February 1962 by combining the areas of Ithithanam and old Kurichy. Geographically, Kurichy was an area of backwaters and small hillocks. Some historians believe that the name “Kurichy” originated from the word “Kurinji,” which refers to hilly landscapes in ancient Tamil-Malayalam culture.
