History
Kurichi Grama Panchayat is an important Grama Panchayat located in Changanassery Taluk of Kottayam District, Kerala. The present-day Kurichi region has historically developed in connection with nearby areas such as Neelamperoor and Vazhappally.
The present Kurichi village was formed by combining the areas of Ithithanam and the old Kurichi region. Ithithanam was formerly part of Vazhappally Panchayat, while Kurichi was part of Neelamperoor Panchayat. Kurichi Grama Panchayat was later formed by combining these areas. Kurichi Grama Panchayat came into existence in February 1962. The boundaries of the Panchayat are the same as those of Kurichi Village.
The place name Kurichi has an ancient historical connection. According to information from the Kerala Revenue Department, the area was formerly part of Neelamperoor. It is believed that the name Kurichi may be associated with the word ‘Kurinji’, which refers to hilly or mountainous terrain.
With the formation of the Panchayat, the local administrative system in the area became more organized. As a local self-government institution, the Panchayat has been working to meet the basic needs of the people and to promote development in areas such as roads, drinking water, sanitation, healthcare, education, and social welfare.
Along with the administrative development of Kurichi Grama Panchayat, the social and economic progress of the region also gained momentum. The growth of agriculture, trade, education, and various employment sectors has played an important role in the development of the Panchayat. Several historically and socially significant places and institutions are also located within the Panchayat.
In short, Kurichi Grama Panchayat evolved from the administrative heritage of the former Neelamperoor–Vazhappally regions and became an independent Grama Panchayat in February 1962. Since then, it has served as an important centre for local development and public welfare activities.
